Kevin Demery returns to Sakhile&Me with Menagerie, a solo exhibition featuring mixed media works with varying degrees of malleability that visually guide the eye between childlike whimsy and seriousness. Menagerie explores the interplay between the reproduction and reconfiguration of historical events, language and visual cues.
The exhibition includes acetone prints depicting scenes of social protest and solidarity taken from the 1960s to 2020, wooden wind-chime sculptures silhouetting the profile of George Stinney Jr., wooden sculpture puzzles with highlighted tongue-in-cheek anagrams (words reassembled to create other words) and fans sporting the faces of individuals from U.S. history, politics, media and popular imagination, some with some unexpected shared interactions and weaving paths.
