About Us

Sakhile Matlhare is co-founder and art director of Sakhile&Me. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Sydney and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University before deciding to trade in a life in the academy to open an exhibition and research space inspired by artists she met during her doctoral fieldwork . Her first jobs working as a freelance muralist and a photo archivist for the Alumni office at her high school started her down a path where art making became a viable platform and vehicle for learning, doing self-work and investigating the possibilities and limitations of studying, living and working abroad.

Daniel Hagemeier is co-founder and business director of Sakhile&Me. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College and a Master of Digital Communication degree from the University of Sydney and has been working with his father at Kunsthandel Hagemeier, a gallery specializing in German Expressionist and Classical Modern art, since 2014. Prior to his involvement in the art industry, Daniel has worked as a self-taught web developer and graphic designer and as a freelance journalist. In his spare time, he enjoys reading non-fiction books, spends time covering the second shift and is an avid fan of Eintracht Frankfurt and the Indianapolis Colts.

Sakhile&Me is an international exhibition and research space working with established and young contemporary artists, curators, critics and researchers. We intentionally prioritize the African continent and its diasporas, with the goal of drawing attention to contextual specificity in and through art - in content, artistic medium and genre. We promote the work and development of artists and researchers by investing in solo and small group exhibitions, both on the African continent and abroad, art fair participation, partnerships with other galleries and art institutions, educational workshops and personalized tours of our space. If you're interested to learn more about our program, to join our mailing list, to propose an exhibition, to suggest an idea for a gallery event, or to schedule an individual or small-group tour, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Sakhile&Me is committed to developing a strong art program that invests in the development of the artists we work with and facilitates educational events that encourage audiences to come to a deeper appreciation and understanding of our artists' work. As we view art as both a platform and a teaching tool, we host artist talks, invite specialists in various fields related to our artists' work and partner with artist residencies, curators and art historians to help increase our artists' public exposure and offer them platforms for research and conversation. That means we also aim to support our artists beyond Sakhile&Me and focus our audiences' attention on the content of the artists' work available at other commercial and non-commercial venues.
